According to Ofcom's annual Communications Market Report, over one in four adults in the UK now use a smartphone.
The report is an annual statistical survey of developments in the communications sector and combines the telecoms regulator’s own research with work carried out by other industry analysts.
The 2011 report found that 27% of adults and 47% of teenagers now own a smartphone, with 59% of those surveyed saying they had acquired their smartphone in the past year.
Apple’s iPhone was revealed to be the most popular smartphone device amongst adults, with 32% of surveyed adult smartphone owners saying they had an iPhone.
The report also found that 28% of British adults now use their mobile phone to access the Internet.
