According to figures released by Gartner smartphones sales have increased by more than 40% year-on-year.
In the last sales quarter, 115 million smartphones were sold to consumers worldwide. This represents a year-on-year jump of 42%.
More than half of the new smartphones sold in the last quarter used the Android operating system. Meanwhile, Apple saw its share of the smartphone market drop as consumers held off on purchasing new iPhones in order to wait for the anticipated launch of the iPhone 5.
